Social media 101 – The entrepreneurs guide to social media

Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to get social. Some small business owners see social media as an ‘add-on’ or something you do if you have some spare time. The reality is quite the contrary. If there was only one fundamental rule in marketing it would be as follows:

“Tell your story in a place where people are listening”

There are two points to that statement:

  2. Telling it in a place where people are listening

1. Telling your story

Storytelling should be at the very heart of any marketing effort. People don’t want to be talked at, they want to be involved and everything you say should come from a true place. This means everything you  write, snap, say or do should follow your business narrative. In other words, you should be implicitly telling people WHY you’re in business as opposed to HOW or WHAT your business does. The following video illustrates this concept and will give you a better idea of how you should be communicating with your audience.

2. Tell it in a place where people are listening

Your next task is to find a place where people spend a lot of time, and have large networks of friends they can share content with. If only somebody created such a place…

Social media is an unparalleled opportunity for businesses to communicate with their audience. It has also leveled the playing field between small and large businesses. Whoever has the best content gets the attention, simple.
