Craig McCormack is 1 of 4 directors including his mum, dad and brother, that own and run the family business and was looking to make his mark. Bedrooms Plus was established in 1980 and has been supplying sliding wardrobe doors to the UK ever since. Craig had begun to sell on other retail sites but decided that having his own online shop was the only way to go and hasn’t looked back since.
Introduce yourself and your businesses; What was your motivation behind
starting them and what do you sell?
My name is Craig McCormack and I am one of the directors at Bedrooms Plus. Bedrooms Plus has been a family run business since 1980. We specialise in Sliding Wardrobe Doors and our own brand of developed products for the joinery & carpentry trade.
My motivation to start an online business was to get away from the so-called normal way of working and create something different while offering a very unique service to our customers.
Did you have any experience in selling online before starting your businesses?
I had briefly started to sell on eBay for a few months before choosing EKM. Other than this I had never sold online before.
How did you earn your first sale?
This was a very surprising moment as it was a simple case of I built the site and sure enough, a customer found us in just a couple of days and placed the very first order. The product parts we were selling at the time were not available anywhere on the market as they are exclusive to the sliding doors that we manufacture so the competition was not high but still. It was our first order and it was over £100. There was no looking back.
How do you balance your workload?
I didn’t for about 4 years until we finally started to get a good team of people on board. Balance is only possible with a team of good managers. Online retail is fast-paced. You can use holiday mode etc to say you are away. I don’t consider that balance. I consider that is throwing sales off a cliff edge. Good people and good training and only work on 3 important tasks per day. If you get extra done then that is a bonus. But get 3 good ones done and done properly.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced since starting your businesses?
Going up against big competition. We compete against big DIY stores on some products and we have been very successful in this. For this reason, we have been focused on bringing our product development in house and supplying direct to customers and not through stores. Big stores dominate Google with page rankings and limitless ad spend so you have to be creative and think outside the box to be found. It can be done though and for several items, our EKM site is page one on Google.
What do you love most about running your own businesses?
Flexibility. I do not go by strict times or days. I ensure all things are handled but having the ability to make some free time is a huge benefit.
What advice would you give to new shop owners just starting out?
Focus on getting in peoples eyes in other ways. Social Media or even going back to basic with outdoor advertising. It is much cheaper and can have a huge impact.
What are your plans for the future?
I am planning on furthering the reach of our KwikCaps Brand which is sold through our EKM store. KwikCaps are now installed in thousands of new build homes across the UK every week and along with our custom sliding wardrobe doors, we plan on having our amazing products backed by our award-winning customer service installed in many more homes.
